But is it really simply a matter of signs being better, more “authentic,” than the reality they have displaced? Perhaps not. If meaning is imposed rather than inherent, then authenticity is less a matter of origin as it is indication. It follows that the significance of signs lies not in their substitution of an alternative, more satisfying “reality” but in their indication, and consequent substantiation, of a reality that constantly eludes us. Adventureland may indeed provide a more satisfying version of reality than nature; but it still professes to represent a place that exists. We may not care to seek out that place, particularly if it fails to rise to the expectations engendered by our signs. But we may rest assured that it exists, and that it might even resemble the version at Adventureland.
